Huang Youyi was invited to Lecture at DUFL

At 10 a.m. on 25th May, Mr. Huang Youyi, director of MTI National Committee, former vice president of International Federation of Translators delivered a lecture entitled “Language, Knowledge, Practice and Discourse Power—Translation and Interpretation against the backdrop of Globalization”. The lecture covered four major aspects: “Getting to know your customers, being versatile, remaining curious while interpreting and attaching importance to delivery while interpreting”. Mr. Huang explained how to get to know your customers through illustrating possible topics an interpreter may encounter, preparation of small talk topics, getting acquainted with the background of people and organizations and getting familiar with the speakers’ accents. The second aspect was fully demonstrated from the perspective of how to be a qualified secretary and a protocol officer both at work and in daily life. He explained how to keep curiosity through the perspective of employer’s lifestyle and emergencies. Finally, he emphasized the significance of delivery by stressing the necessity of maintaining an upright image and manner, accurate and impressive pronunciation.

His lecture was based on his over 40 years’ practical experience in translating and interpreting. In his lecture, Mr. Huang adopted a large number of vivid examples and shared his learning and working experience in translating/interpreting to demonstrate how an outstanding interpreter should work. As a reputable translator and interpreter, Mr. Huang’s splendid theoretical explanations, vivid examples, prudent attitudes, humorous demeanor won thunderous applause from the audience.
