Fan Junchi Winning the 2nd Place in All China Interpreting Contest
Fan Junchi, Liu Xiaoyue and Ma Ximan, MTI students from SATI, won the 2nd prize of the contest in the national final of the 6th All China Interpreting Contest. The contest, held in Beijing Normal University on June 17, 2017, was co-hosted by Translation Association of China and ZYTK Education. In addition, Fan and Liu, together with a contestant from another University won the 3rd prize in the Group Contest. Ms. Zhao Ying was awarded “Outstanding Instructor” of the contest.
Thiscontest kicked off in February 2017 in 22 provinces around China, involving1844 contestants from 456 colleges and universities. 499 contestants entered the second round to participate in the regional contests. This screening left 55 top contestants for the national final in Beijing Normal University on June 17.
This contest took the “Belt and Road Initiative” as the theme, testing the contestants’ interpreting competence and skills in the related philosophy and concepts as well as the national conditions of countries along the belt and road and their cooperation in simulated field interpreting situations.
The contest was composed of two parts, namely English-Chinese interpreting and Chinese-English interpreting, with 3 sets of interpreting materials. The English-Chinese interpreting covered China-EU economic cooperation, data and artificial intelligence and digital technology. The high delivery speed of the speakers and the fresh content demanded the contestants’ a good mastery of the background knowledge. The Chinese-English interpreting was even more challenging. It did not only involve many numbers and figures, the intensity of information itself was a real test of the power of memory and skills of the contestants. Throughout the contest, Fan Junchi, Liu Xiaoyue and Ma Ximan displayed their virtue of interpreting competence, professional skills and language proficiency.
